PROGRAM OVERVIEW CORE MISSION & FUNCTIONS

The High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program is a federal grant program that coordinates and funds multi-agency law enforcement efforts to eliminate or reduce drug trafficking in critical regions of the United States.

Program Overview
* Creation: Established by Congress under the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988 and made permanent through the Office of National Drug Control Policy Reauthorization Act of 2006.
* Administration: Managed by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).
* Reach: Operates 33 regional HIDTAs spanning across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the District of Columbia.

Core Mission and Functions
* Collaboration: Joins federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies into unified regional teams.
* Flexibility: Empowers local Executive Boards (composed of equal numbers of federal and non-federal leaders) to design strategies tailored to unique regional drug threats.
* Intelligence Sharing: Uses advanced deconfliction systems and shared intelligence to prevent overlap, protect officer safety, and dismantle major drug trafficking organizations.
* Scope: Funds stretch past traditional enforcement into prevention, treatment, and threat analysis initiatives like the Drug Threat Analysis Group (DTAG).
